Casal Borsetti

Ravenna

It's almost like a fairy tale:
Around 1900, a customs officer dutifully guarded the coast near Casal Baronia. His name was Giovanni Borsetti. When he retired, he was allowed to stay in his little house, thus becoming the founder of what is now Casal Borsetti.

Casal Borsetti is one of two Adriatic seaside resorts that has the honor of being named after a person: Customs Sub-Sergeant Giovanni Borsetti.

How did he manage that? Quite simply: he was the first resident of this town.

In a small customs hut in the Pineta, where he lived "amidst a thousand difficulties," Borsetti bravely carried out his duties while also running a cobbler's workshop on the side. The customs hut was restored in 1990. Today, visitors can see Borsetti's original cobbler's hammer there.

Long story short:
At the end of his term, Borsetti, who had grown fond of this place, asked to be allowed to stay there even after his retirement. His request was granted, and so Giovanni Borsetti - or "Zanetto," as he was affectionately called by the residents - remains the first citizen of Casal Borsetti even after his death on April 15, 1906.

Eleven years after his death, at the request of the population and by acclamation, his name was officially adopted.

Cuccagna Aquatica

Only the Best Made It Through

On August 10, the feast day of the patron saint San Lorenzo, the Cuccagna acquatica takes place alongside many other events - a popular attraction for all vacationers. Here, participants have the chance to put their seafaring skills to the test.

It's a bit like "Games Without Borders" or "Takeshi's Castle": Participants must balance their way along an oiled, slippery mast to grab a flag attached to the end.
Most of them take a spectacular tumble into the water, much to the amusement of the crowd. Great fun, fantastic atmosphere.
