Fido Beach in San Mauro a Mare offers its four-legged guests a place to swim (in a pool, not in the sea), entertainment, dog-sitting services, and veterinary care.
Fido Beach was established in 2001 by the animal-friendly lifeguards of Grandi Spiagge. It all began with a small beach area marked off by a fishing net. With a great deal of patience and dedication, the beach was expanded. So much so that today it is regarded as the flagship of niche tourism in Romagna and has been honored with the Adriatic Coast Award.
Regulations
Even at Italy's oldest dog beach, there are still some rules to follow:
- Dogs must be on a leash, have a muzzle (to be carried, not worn), and have proof of vaccination and health.
- Owners must clean up after their dogs immediately.
- Dogs are only allowed to swim during these times: 7:30–9:00 a.m., 12:30–1:30 p.m., 6:00–8:00 p.m.
- Owners are liable for any damage caused by their dog.
- Female dogs in heat are not allowed.
- Only registered, vaccinated, and dewormed dogs are allowed. Puppies: Deworming and age-appropriate vaccinations required.
- Dogs may not be left unattended, tied up, or confined (except within the area of their owner's own beach umbrella).
- Access to the sea is strictly prohibited, except during permitted swimming hours.
