The Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1750 and acquired an art gallery in 1807, which was intended to serve two purposes (though presumably not in that order):
- to provide visual reference material for art students and
- to house the art treasures that had been scattered following the fall of the Venetian Republic and the secularization of many monasteries and churches under Napoleon.
In 1817, the Academy moved into the building of the Scuola Grande della Carità.
The Accademia offers the most comprehensive overview of Venetian painting: from Paolo Veneziano, through Bellini and Carpaccio, to Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Bassano, and Lorenzo Lotto.
The 17th and 18th centuries are represented by works by Tiepolo, Longhi, Guardi, Carriera, Canaletto, and others. Art lovers will be deeply impressed by the diversity and beauty of the paintings.
