In 1889, Duchess Felicita Bevilacqua La Massa donated the palazzo to the city after establishing a foundation to support and exhibit the work of Venetian artists.
At the turn of the century, Venice established a gallery of modern art there, which houses paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, including works by Max Klinger, Auguste Rodin, Max Liebermann, Marc Chagall, and Klimt.
Ca' Pesaro also houses the Museum of Oriental Art, which displays Far Eastern art objects and is the most important collection of its kind in Europe.
