Monfalcone (with a population of about 27,000 and an area of approximately 20 square kilometers) is known for its massive shipyard, where cruise ships are the primary vessels built. A strong labor movement emerged here in the 1920s. It played a significant role, as it gave rise to vigorous resistance against Mussolini's fascist rule-resistance that the German occupiers would later also come to feel during World War II. (Very close by, at Duino Castle, you can even visit an old Nazi bunker blasted into the karst.
) During the fighting, 503 shipyard workers lost their lives, a fact commemorated today by several memorials.
