View from Duino Castle of Duino Bay
Incidentally, the photo clearly shows the Dante Rock, or Scoglio di Dante, a ruin situated on a karst promontory at the opposite end of the bay.
It is named after the scholar and Italian national saint Dante Alighieri, who is said to have lived here for a time during his exile.

Few people mention it, but there is more to see in the basement of Duino Castle: a Nazi bunker that the Organisation Todt had blasted into the karst rock during World War II (following the occupation of Trieste by the German Military Command Adria). The remains can still be viewed today.
A visit to the bunker is usually included in the admission price for the castle and the park.

Incidentally, the park-which was greatly admired by Rainer Maria Rilke-offers a veritable feast of blooms across various levels, with cascades of flowers. It is a wonderful place to take a leisurely stroll and revel in the flowers.
The park owes much of its beauty to the special care provided by Prince Raimond von Thurn und Taxis, into whose possession it returned after the end of the English occupation.
