Lignano is located in southern Friuli at the tip of a peninsula and is the perfect place for a family vacation (or a getaway without the kids):
A beautiful beach (also dog-friendly), a lively town center, a zoo, marinas, opportunities for day trips, and attractions for all ages. Not to mention the well-maintained 18-hole golf course.
By the way, the sand (for the beach) comes from South Tyrol. More precisely: from the Dolomites. And it's delivered right to the door by the Tagliamento River.

Beach Life in Lignano
The Young City
Although Lignano's oldest church-the Church of St. Zacharias in the Pineta district-dates back to the 16th century, the settlement at that time consisted of only a few farmhouses situated in the malaria-ridden marshlands.
By the early 20th century, the area known as Sabbiadoro was already being used as a beach, accessible by boat from Marano. In the 1930s, the first seaside terrace was built on the site of today's Terrazza al mare, and with the construction of a road connecting it to Latisana, the first summer visitors-mostly Italians-began to arrive.
After 1950, Lignano Pineta emerged with its unusual, spiral-shaped main street, and mass tourism took hold. Today, approximately 7,000 residents live there year-round, primarily in the center of Sabbiadoro, and the marina and golf club also attract visitors outside the summer season.
