The Bridge of Sighs connects the Doge's Palace to the adjoining prisons. It is probably one of the most photographed bridges in the world. Most people who entered here were taken to prison and then led out again to be executed. For many prisoners, it was their last "free" view of the lagoon.
Often imitated, never equaled: at the prestigious St. John's College in Oxford, there is a bridge of a similar style. Perhaps it leads students to their final exam? Surely just a coincidence.
