Like Giambattista Tiepolo, who was nearly the same age, he had to provide for his family as a very young man following his father's early death - a burden was lifted from him when Tiepolo fell in love with his younger sister Cecilia and married her.
Giannantonio then took over the management of his father's painting workshop, and the particularly charming panels on the organ balustrade of the Church of S'Angelo Raffaele, located on the outskirts of the city to the west, are his work - long neglected by art-historical research. In a style that vibrates with an almost Impressionist quality, Giannantonio Guardi tells the story of Tobias across seven panels: how the Archangel Raphael leads him to a miraculous catch of fish, enabling him later to cure his father's blindness.
